About Us
Our Mission:
At Lantern, we believe every student carries an inner light — an individual capacity for passion, creativity, movement, and purpose. Our mission is to meet each student where they are and help create the conditions that allow that light to emerge and shine.
This belief is rooted in the ancient Greek ideal of Paideia: the idea that a well-rounded life develops through pursuit of arts and athletics with harmony between mind and body, discipline and imagination, challenge and enjoyment.
This belief is rooted in Paideia: the idea that creative, physical, and intellectual growth belong together in a well-rounded life. Seeking harmony between mind and body, discipline and imagination, challenge and enjoyment.
The Lantern Method:
The Lantern Method is our founder’s learning philosophy and a collection of techniques, materials, and resources developed through more than a decade of hands-on teaching experience, research, and professional training.
At the heart of the Lantern Method is a genuine side-by-side connection: learn by doing, notice what captures the student’s interest, understand how they respond, and use that understanding to illuminate the next step. Insights drawn from foundational work in psychology about motivation, attention, and individual differences are central to this philosophy.
Teachers, coaches, and mentors are lanterns too. Learning often begins when one of them — or an art form, a sport, or an idea — awakens an interest that can grow into passion under the right conditions. Their role is not to decide what a student’s light should look like, but to illuminate possibilities, guide exploration, and help each person discover what brings a spark to their eyes. As that passion grows, the student begins to shine in their own way. Like the varied rays in our emblem, each student expresses something distinct about their inner world through the interests they pursue.
These resources are designed to help instructors create flexible and supportive learning experiences for students with different learning styles, cultural backgrounds, abilities, and neurodevelopmental differences, including autism and ADHD. They include ideas for communication, pacing, movement, sensory comfort, motivation, and active participation.

Our Founder

Michael Valiev
Founder, Lead Instructor, Creator of the Lantern Method
"I see myself as a mirror for my students: reflecting their strengths and guiding them towards growth and self-discovery."
About:
Michael Valiev is an accomplished musician, athlete, and educator who brings together artistic excellence, athletic discipline, and a deep psychological insight.
Born into a family of psychologists, Michael was introduced at an early age to paideia and its emphasis on growth through arts and athletics. This philosophy has shaped both his life and his approach to teaching.
Growing up in a family of immigrants with 5 children, he has lived in three countries and traveled extensively, giving him a multicultural perspective and an appreciation for different learning styles.
His lived experience with ADHD informs a flexible, inclusive approach that welcomes different ways of learning. It has given him firsthand insight into importance of curiosity, movement, and adapted pacing in helping students discover their strengths.
In addition to his teaching career, he has performed as a musician around the world and competed as an athlete, winning multiple championships in pentathlon and acrobatics.
Credentials:
Michael holds a Master of Music (MM) degree from Berklee College of Music, with a thesis focused on innovative pedagogy. His research developed a unique teaching technique that integrates dance and movement to enhance learning — a tool he has successfully incorporated into the Lantern Method.
His training includes extensive additional university coursework in pedagogy and pedagogical psychology, as well as obtaining a CPD-accredited certification in special education needs. He has taught privately for kids and adults for over 10 years and has been teaching at Berklee College of Music for the past 5 years.
Michael has also delivered teaching clinics and performance outreaches in schools and communities across the world including Netherlands, Israel, Italy, Germany, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Panama, Argentina, Canada, and multiple U.S. states. And with a deep commitment to giving back, he has led inclusive workshops in mental health institutions, hospitals, prisons, elderly homes, and shelters.
